Biography
British-born artist Mark Skelcher is now a Cairns local, working from his studio in Trinity Park and also painting outdoors ‘en plein air’ in the landscape.
He has a Foundation Studies (Art & Design) – BTEC Diploma with Merit from Cheltenham College of Art & Design (2002-2003) and BA (Hons) Fine Art – 1st Class Degree from Birmingham City University in Central England (2003-2006).
Since graduating and moving overseas to Cairns, Australia in 2007, Mark has exhibited in many groups and solo shows, most notably his 1st solo exhibition at Cairns Art Gallery in 2014.
In 2016, he was a finalist in the Queensland Regional Art Awards and Percival Portrait Painting Prize in 2016 and 2018.
At the forefront of Mark’s practice is his love of painting.
Attracted to the diversity of the medium he works in thick impasto oil paint, layering and building the surface of the canvas with expressive broad painterly mark-making before adding the finer details.
His paintings cover a range of subjects from portraits and still life to abstracts and landscapes, with his recent body of work inspired by his local surroundings of Cairns and the Northern Beaches.
As well as his own personal works for sale, Mark paints commissioned pieces by request and murals, recently completing a large 3m+ wall mural for the Cairns Hospital.
